WASHINGTON– The head of Davie Protection , a new American sis business of the widely known Canadian shipbuilder Davie, says he’s “bullish” on the business’s capacity to profit from the competent labor force in Texas to at some point build American icebreakers.
“We spent over two years considering various shipyards in the US and possible purchase targets … Most importantly, they’ve [Texas] got an excellent labor force demographic,” Davie Defense CEO Kai Skvarla informed Damaging Defense in a meeting today. “Second is Texas is a good place to do business.
“Third would exist’s a lot of innovation and management skill in Texas and in the Houston area because of, once again, I think a lot of it comes off of the oil and gas” industries, he included.
Davie previously today introduced its plans to invest $ 1 billion right into Gulf Copper shipyard, a Texas business that the Canadian shipbuilder acquired earlier this year Keeping that investment, Davie wishes to change the centers into what it’s calling an “American Icebreaker Factory,” with its eyes mainly on the US Coast Guard’s pending competitors for the Arctic Security Cutter program Those medium-sized icebreakers would certainly run in parallel with the larger Polar Security Cutters to make sure the Coast Guard and the US Navy’s fleets have reputable access to the High North and Antarctic areas.
Skvarla claimed in the short term, Davie will remain to support Gulf Copper’s existing work while it spends the next 18 months preparing the centers to create icebreakers.
“Gulf Copper is currently really energetic in both business and government ship repair,” he stated. “Our strategy is to support their existing work there, with their existing clients, and assist them to expand even more collaborate with the United States government.”
